The lion rampant is the ancient standard of the Kings and Queens of Scotland. It represents strength and nobility and is used as a symbol of royalty. It’s first recorded use was in the 13th century by King William the Lyon, where the emblem featured on the shield of the royal coat of arms of the ancient Kingdom of Scotland. Today it remains one of Scotland's most recognisable symbols.
