Resembling a twisted teardrop, it may seem surprising that the fig-shaped buta or boteh design as it was originally known, actually comes from India. However, its western name comes from the town of Paisley, in West Scotland, a centre for textiles. In the 1800s the town became known for its woven Kashmir shawls with their distinctive paisley designs.
